7 Screen Free Activities

Family Fun That Doesn't Involve Screens

By Lauren Efkowitz, Macaroni Kid Moorestown-Mt Laurel April 2, 2020

Everything is closed around us and many of us are scrambling to find ways to keep the kids entertained without constantly allowing them screen time.  Here are 7 screen free activities for the kids or whole family.

1. Checkout Macaroni Kid's Big Book of Crafts.

Get out the crayons, glue, paper, glitter etc. and start crafting!  Make a butterfly, easter eggs and crowns.  The possibilities are endless.  Click here for Macaroni Kid's Big Book of Crafts.

2. Go on a Scavenger Hunt

Create a scavenger hunt for the kids to do either indoors/outdoors.  This will most definitely keep them busy for some time.  If you do decide to take the scavenger hunt outdoors be sure to continue practicing social distancing.

3. Play with Chalk

Sometimes we forget how much fun the simplest things are -- like chalk!  This can be used both indoors or outdoors.  Take it outside and create masterpieces on the driveway or sidewalks for people to see.  I have a 1 year old and we enjoy chalk time indoors.  I simply use a black piece of construction paper, tape it to the table and hand him the chalk.  He absolutely loves it!

4. Sensory Bin

Create a sensory bin.  There are millions of different types of sensory bins you can create.  I try to keep mine taste safe since my little guy is only 1.  Sensory bins are a great way for kids to use their senses as they explore new things.  All you need is a large plastic container (ours broke so I've been improvising with tupperware), rice/water/cooked pasta/mud/shaving cream etc, scoopers (measuring spoons/cups) and larger cups for them to scoop into.  Depending on the age of your child you can add cars, small dinosaurs, leaves, sticks etc.  Then let them explore!

5. Board Games

Have a family game night! Break out the classic board games you loved as a child (Monopoly, Sorry, Pictionary, Scrabble etc.) or try a new one!

6. Create an Obstacle Course

Create and obstacle course either indoors or outdoors and have a race to see who can complete the course the fastest.  Use chairs, pillows, furniture, slides.  Get really creative! What a great way to let out some energy and get some exercise too!

7. Bake

If you're anything like me then you LOVE sweet treats.  With all the extra time we're spending at home now is the perfect time to work on your baking skills.  My son loves helping out in the kitchen.  I measure, he pours and in the end we create something so tasty!  Try out one of grandmas famous recipes, or scroll through pinterest.  I've been watching the Great British Baking Show on Netflix and just might try my hand at one of their recipes.....I might be getting a bit ahead of myself.  Take the baking a step further have a baking competition!
